Why Toronto Homeowners Call Our Deck Railing Installers

Maybe the wood posts are wobbling. Maybe the spindles are cracked and look terrible. Or maybe you just got a notice from your city inspector saying your deck doesn’t meet code.
Here’s what good deck railing installation gets you:

✔  Safety that meets Ontario Building Code – no wobbly posts or loose spindles
✔  Better curb appeal – railings are the first thing people notice on a deck
✔  Higher property value – updated railings make a real difference at resale
✔  Peace of mind for families with kids and pets
✔  Less maintenance if you upgrade from wood to aluminum or composite
✔  Proper height and spacing that passes inspection every time

As a deck company that’s been building across the GTA since 2019, we’ve installed hundreds of railing systems. We know what works in our climate and what falls apart after two winters. That experience is the reason homeowners from Scarborough to Oakville keep calling us back.

Types of Deck Railings Our Deck Contractors Install in Toronto & GTA

Wooden Deck Railings

Wood railings are still the most popular choice for pressure treated wood decks and cedar decks in Toronto. They give you that classic backyard look that never really goes out of style.

Our deck contractors build wooden railings using pressure treated lumber or cedar. You can go with all-wood pickets for a traditional feel, or mix it up with black metal pickets between wood posts and rails. That wood-and-metal combo has gotten really popular in neighborhoods like Leaside, Riverdale, and the Kingsway – it gives a cleaner modern look while still keeping the warmth of natural wood. This versatile railing style works beautifully with both pressure treated decks in Richmond Hill and cedar deck installations across Markham and North York.

Fair warning though – wood railings need maintenance. You’ll be staining or sealing them every 2-3 years to keep them looking good and prevent rot. That’s just the reality of wood in Toronto weather. But if you like the natural look and don’t mind a weekend project now and then, they’re a great option at the lowest price point.

Aluminum Railings With Pickets

Aluminum railing with pickets is the most common upgrade we install across the GTA. It’s the traditional railing style – vertical pickets between top and bottom rails – but made from aluminum instead of wood. The difference? Zero maintenance. No painting, no staining, no rotting posts.

Prices start at $83 per linear foot installed, and they go up depending on the brand and finish you pick. Premium products come with powder coated aluminum that holds up really well against Toronto’s salt air and freeze-thaw cycles. Multiple colors are available on most lines – black is by far the most popular, but we also install white, bronze, and dark grey depending on the brand.

Today‚ Richmond HillMarkham and Vaughan homeowners love aluminum picket railings because of their clean‚ sleek design and cost-effectiveness․ They complement composite decking systems‚ PVC decks and pressure treated wood decks․ For these reasons‚ aluminum picket railings have become a favorite among homeowners from Mississauga to Newmarket

Aluminum Railing With Glass Inserts

Want a cleaner look than pickets? Glass insert railings use tempered glass panels set into an aluminum frame. You get the strength of aluminum with the open, airy feel of glass. Some versions come with a top rail, others go without for an even sleeker appearance.

Glass insert railings start at $130 per linear foot installed. They’re a really popular choice for pool decks and elevated decks in Mississauga and Oakville where homeowners want to keep the view open. If your backyard backs onto a ravine or green space‚ glass inserts let you look out at the view instead of staring at metal bars․

The glass panes are made of tempered safety glass‚ and will not shatter or shower glass if struck․ The glass panels mostly clean themselves‚ but are occasionally wiped down with a squeegee and glass cleaner‚ usually done every few weeks during the summer months․ Glass insert railings have become increasingly popular in Vaughan, Richmond Hill, and Markham, especially on elevated decks and second-story walkouts where homeowners want to preserve sightlines to their backyard landscaping. They work beautifully with composite decks and PVC decking systems where the clean lines complement the low-maintenance materials.

Cable Railings

A cable system consists of horizontal stainless steel cables strung between aluminum posts․ It gives a super clean‚ minimal look that is popular in modern homes․ You will see these railings in magazines and on home improvement shows․ They are perfect for more modern composite decks and PVC decks‚ and are typically very sleek and modern․ It is also a growing phenomenon in North York, Vaughan and downtown Toronto

Cable railing systems may start at $180/ft installed․ The cables are expensive‚ and the hardware used to tension them is also relatively expensive․ But if you want a new‚ modern-looking deck in North York‚ Etobicoke or downtown Toronto‚ it would be hard to beat․

One thing to know – cable railings need periodic tension adjustment. The cables can loosen over time, especially with Toronto’s temperature swings. Our deck contractors install them with adjustment hardware so you can re-tension yourself, or we can come back and do it for you.

Composite Deck Railings – Timbertech & Trex

If you’re building a composite deck, it makes sense to match your railings. Timbertech and Trex both make composite railing systems that color-match their decking lines. The materials, the finish, the texture – everything coordinates so your deck looks like one cohesive design.

Composite railings start around $210 per linear foot when installed‚ so they are on the pricier side․ They carry the same 25+ year warranty as the deck and never require painting or staining․ Composite railings will not rot‚ crack‚ or splinter․ For homeowners in AuroraNewmarketRichmond Hill and King City who want a completely maintenance free outdoor living space‚ matching composite railings with your composite deck are the way to go․

Frameless Glass Railings

Frameless glass railings are the premium option. Thick tempered glass panels mounted with bottom spigots – no posts, no frame, no obstruction. Just glass. It’s the closest thing to having no railing at all while still meeting Ontario building code.

Prices start at $190 per linear foot installed. These are perfect for open concept outdoor living spaces, rooftop decks, and properties where the view is the whole point. We install a lot of frameless glass in waterfront properties along Lake Ontario in Mississauga and Toronto, and in homes with ravine lots in Scarborough, Richmond Hill, and Don Mills. These premium railings complement high-end cedar decks and composite deck installations where the aesthetic demands an unobstructed view and the homeowner wants the absolute best.

The glass is typically 12mm tempered safety glass – thick enough to handle wind loads and impact without any frame support. The spigot mounting system at the base keeps everything secure and clean-looking.

Deck Railing Height Code in Ontario – What You Need to Know

This is the part most homeowners don’t think about until their inspector shows up. Ontario has specific rules about deck railing height, and getting it wrong means ripping out what you just installed and starting over.
Here’s the quick version of Ontario Building Code railing requirements:

36-Inch Railing Height

Required when your deck surface is less than 5 feet above grade (ground level). This is the most common height for standard backyard decks. Most ground-level and low-rise decks in Toronto fall into this category.

42-Inch Railing Height

Required when your deck surface is 5 feet or higher above grade. Elevated decks, second-story walkouts, and raised decks with walkout basements all need the taller 42-inch railing. Lots of homes in hilly areas of North York, Scarborough bluffs, and the ravine neighborhoods require this height.

48-Inch Railing Height – Pool Code Ontario

Required for any railing around a swimming pool. Ontario pool fencing code requires 48-inch railings with specific gate and latch requirements. If your deck wraps around or is adjacent to a pool, our deck contractors make sure the pool-side railing meets the higher standard while the rest of the deck gets the standard height.
The Ontario Building Code also has rules about the spacing between pickets (no more than 4 inches apart so a kid can’t fit their head through), the strength of the railing (has to withstand certain force loads), and how the railing connects to the deck frame. Our deck railing installers build every project to pass inspection the first time.

Frequently Asked Questions About Deck Railings in Toronto

What's the Best Type of Deck Railing for Toronto Weather?

Aluminum and glass railings handle Toronto weather the best. They don’t rot, warp, crack, or need refinishing after our harsh winters. Powder coated aluminum is especially good because the coating protects against salt, moisture, and UV damage. Wood railings work fine too but expect to re-stain every 2-3 years. Composite railings from Timbertech and Trex also perform well in our climate since they’re engineered for freeze-thaw cycles.

How Much Does It Cost to Add Railings to an Existing Deck?

Adding railings to an existing deck in Toronto costs between $55 and $280 per linear foot depending on the material you choose. Basic aluminum picket railings start around $83 per linear foot installed. For a deck with 50 linear feet of railing, you’re looking at roughly $4,000 to $14,000 total. The exact price depends on the railing type, your deck’s condition, and whether the existing frame can support the new railing or needs reinforcement.

How Tall Does My Deck Railing Need to Be in Ontario?

Ontario Building Code requires 36 inches for decks under 5 feet high, 42 inches for decks 5 feet or higher, and 48 inches for pool railings. Getting the height wrong is one of the most common code violations we see when homeowners try to install railings themselves or hire inexperienced contractors. Our deck railing installers always build to the correct code height for your specific situation.

Can I Mix Different Railing Types on the Same Deck?

Absolutely. We do this all the time. A common setup is glass railings on the side of the deck facing the backyard view, and aluminum picket railings on the other sides to save money. Another popular combo is glass panels on the pool-facing side (for 48-inch pool code compliance) and cable railings elsewhere. Our deck builders can design any combination that works for your layout and budget.

How Long Does Deck Railing Installation Take?

Most railing installations take 1-3 days depending on the type and how much railing you need. A simple aluminum picket railing replacement on a standard deck is usually a one-day job. Glass railings and frameless systems take longer because the glass panels need to be custom measured and ordered. From first measurement to finished installation, glass railing projects typically take 2-4 weeks including the ordering lead time.

What's the Difference Between Glass Insert Railings and Frameless Glass Railings?

Glass insert railings have an aluminum frame with glass panels set inside. You still see the aluminum posts and rails. Frameless glass railings are just thick tempered glass panels mounted directly to the deck with bottom spigots – no frame visible at all. Frameless gives a more open, modern look but costs more. Glass inserts start at $130 per linear foot while frameless starts at $190 per linear foot.
