Built for Toronto Weather
Toronto weather puts decks through a lot. Summer heat and sunlight, fall leaves and moisture, ice and snow in winter, freeze-thaw in the spring. Your deck faces it all. We’ve seen what happens when other builders take shortcuts with improper materials and drainage. That’s why we provide fasteners rated for the Canadian winter, spaced and protected joists for our climate, and materials rated for temperature ranges from -30°C to +35°C.
Local Building Code Experts
As a professional deck builder, we know the building codes Toronto has specific rules, such as how high or far back from property lines your deck can be built and railings. In Vaughan and Mississauga, the permit process is a little different, and we’ll take care of all of this so you don’t have to figure it out yourself.

DECK CONTRACTOR NEWS / TIPS & GUIDES
Pressure Treated Wood Decks
One of the most popular decking materials in Toronto is pressure treated wood due to it being inexpensive and providing the natural wood grain appearance desired by most homeowners.
Pros of Pressure Treated Wood
It is often chemically treated to resist decay, fungi, and insect damage, and is generally made of softwoods (such as pine) for ease of cutting and installation to keep labor costs down.
Cons of Pressure Treated Wood
Wood treated under pressure for external use may swell, warp and shrink over time and it should be stained or sealed every 2 to 3 years. However, if you are on a lower budget, you are comfortable with maintenance, then pressure treated wood is a viable option.

Composite Decks
Composite decking is made of a combination of wood fibers and plastic. It has a similar look to real wood, and needs little maintenance.
Pros of Composite Decking
Composite does not rot, warp or splinter, and it resists mold and insects. Composite decking can last for many years without the need for staining or sealing. It requires little maintenance; a wash or two per year is generally sufficient. In addition, composite is environmentally friendly; many manufacturers use recycled wood and plastic in its construction.
Cons of Composite Decking
Though the initial cost is somewhat higher than pressure treated lumber, the long-term savings on maintenance makes this a popular choice among Toronto homeowners.

PVC Decks
PVC decking is 100% plastic. If you’re looking for a product that has no maintenance, then this is it.
Pros of PVC Decking
PVC decks are lightweight yet super durable. They require virtually no maintenance and can last 25 years or more. Furthermore, they will not rot, mold, or be affected by insects. PVC deck boards are available in many colors and finishes, including those that mimic real wood grain. When it eventually wears out (decades later), PVC deck boards can also be recycled. No trees cut down, and nothing going to landfill.
Cons of Composite Decking
It typically costs more than wood or composite. If it is in the open, it can get hot in summer. It is a good option if you want something durable and sustainable.

IPE Decks (Brazilian Hardwood)
Also called Brazilian Walnut, IPE is the premium choice for homeowners looking for the richest material available. This extremely dense and hard wood is a deep shade of brown.
Pros of IPE Decking
IPE also lasts 40-75 years (4 times that of pressure treated wood), and is both insect and fire resistant. It will eventually weather into a silver-grey patina, or you can oil it once a year to keep the original color rich. The IPE deck is so beautiful people notice.
Cons of IPE Decking
IPE, while more expensive to purchase and harder to work with due to its extreme density, is the best choice if you want a stunningly beautiful deck that will last a lifetime.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK US FAQ
How much does a new deck cost in Toronto?
It depends on size, materials, and design. A basic pressure treated deck might start around $30-50 per square foot. Composite runs higher, around $40-70per square foot. PVC deck price will range from $50-80 per square foo. IPE deck can be $60-100+. We give free quotes so you know exactly what you’re looking at.
Do I need a permit for my deck?
A building permit is generally required in Toronto if the deck is over 60 cm (24inches) above ground, attached to the house, larger than 10 square meters (108sq. ft.), or acts as a main entrance. Even without a permit, the local zoning by-law must be followed with respect to setbacks and lot coverage when constructing a small detached low-level deck.
How long does it take to build a deck?
Most residential decks take 3-7 days once we start building. Bigger projects about 500 sq.ft. and up might take 2-3 weeks. Decks needing permits might take longer due to on-site inspections scheduling.
What is the best time of year to build a deck?
Homeowners may think decks can only be built in spring and summer, but fall would actually be an ideal time to build a deck. However, another common concern, of how autumn weather would affect the timber of a new deck, is not applicable in fact.
